Soria Family – Mt Charleston Family Portraits

Posted on Sep 19, 2012

My dear friends, Paula and Alex are taking their brood and moving up to Vancouver, BC. I’m trying really hard not to think about it. Paula has been such an amazing friend to me and I’m going to miss crafty projects and random trips to thrift stores and her precious munchkins!

Being that they are about to embark on a life in bear country, for realz bear country, we thought an afternoon on Mt. Charleston right outside of Las Vegas was the perfect place for their last set of family photos with me… I’m weeping already!

There will be texts and Facebook and even Thanksgiving this year in California! But still, constant face-time (not the phone kind) cannot be replicated. Love you all!!

We are going to miss you all SO much!!

Vintage Wedding Ring

Posted on Sep 18, 2012

My paternal grandmother passed away the year before I was born. My aunt gave my mother one of my grandmother’s rings, something she’d thought could be passed to one of three daughters. Little did anyone know I was on the horizon!

All growing up I would try on the ring that sat on display on my mom’s swan ring holder, draped around its long slender neck. I’d slip it on my thumb (the largest appendage on my hand) and type on the computer or just sit at her desk. I loved how it had asymmetrical stones and such extraordinary detail. As each of my sisters’ married they took a diamond from the setting to place in their wedding band set.

Flash forward a decade or so when I met Sir Luke and fell madly in love with him. He comments regularly about how he lucked out on finding a girl who came with a ring. We had it sized for my fingers which didn’t grow up to the size of my mother’s and I began to wear it ALL. THE. TIME. I even slept in it. That’s how much I love it.

The story of the ring is vague. It was given to my grandmother while she was in college at Berkley. A “friend” gave her a platinum diamond ring… We don’t know what  that means exactly but it’s a fun story to tell because she didn’t marry that “friend.” There is another set of rings that my aunt has that were the wedding bands given to my grandmother by my grandfather, which are also very beautiful!

The ring is absolutely stunning. It’s got a gorgeous art deco design with engravings that are starting to rub off after nearly 70 years of wear. I wear it on special occasions only, now. A couple years ago I cracked the thin bottom band once while moving a piece of furniture… My jeweler shook his finger in my face, “this is fine jewelry!” I learned my lesson.

Are you planning on a vintage ring or estate piece? Are you lucky to inherit an heirloom like I did?

Make it Monday: DIY Fortune Cookie Place Cards

Posted on Sep 10, 2012

I’m pretty crafty. Sometimes too crafty for my own good. I learned this last year when I tried to teach fifteen young women how to make fabric roses. I thought it was a piece of cake… So I dialed back my crafts for this year’s crafty projects for these same girls and they all made them with the greatest of ease.

So today is an easy peasy project that has very few ingredients. I give you, the DIY Felt Fortune Cookie Place Card. And there’s no sewing!

Isn’t it adorable!?

What you’ll need:

  • Felt (I used tan but you could make them to coordinate with your wedding colors too)
  • Hot glue gun and glue sticks
  • Floral White or Large Paper Clips
  • Fabric Scissors
  • Heavy Duty Scissors
  • Paper and Pen or Printed Names

Step 1: Trace two circles with something four inches across. I used a giant vanilla scented candle. Then cut out the circles with your fabric scissors.

TIP: Invest in a nice pair of Ginger scissors and ONLY use them on fabric. My mom was kind of a Nazi about her fabric scissors when I was a kid and I’m pretty much the same way with mine now. But You will ALWAYS be able to cute perfectly with them if you follow this. She maybe had two pairs of scissors in my eighteen years at home.

Step 2: Cut your floral wire(or large paper clip) down to fit within the circles and set in place.

Step 3: Run a bead of hot glue around the edge of the circle and a line in the center for the wire/paper clip. Press the other circle on top.

Step 4: Bend the wire in half creating a “V” shape. Now you have a taco.

Step 5: Fold the fabric in half and behold your fortune cookie. You can reshape and fold more or less and bend the wire more.

Step 6: Insert your paper strip with your guests’ name. I trimmed the edges into a cute banner shape.

Isn’t she…I mean the cookies adorable?!

Having trouble trying to figure out what you want to DIY for your big day? Place cards? Guest “Book”? Favors? Decor? Drop me a line and I can come up with something based around your theme and color scheme. Email me at meg (at) megruth (dot) com

Girls, Women, Sisters, Mother, Daughters – Portraits of Women

Posted on Sep 5, 2012

I’ve been an aunt since I was six years old. These beautiful women below are my nieces and my sister. Kahla (pronounced like Kayla) turned 21 over the long weekend. It’s blowing my mind that I have watched this women grow up. She’s almost finished schooling to become a private pilot! Way more guts than I have. Becky is and has always been a burst of sunshine and happiness. I remember her as a baby being the most smiley thing I’d ever seen. And she hasn’t changed an ounce! Those braces come off in a month! YAY!

Thanks to my dear sister for letting me grow up with these beautiful girls. Such gorgeous women and such examples of what women and family should be.

I love them all so much!
