Valentine’s Romance

Posted on Jul 24, 2008

My parents got married on Valentine’s Day many a year ago. They fused together two families when they began their life together.

When Sir Luke and I got married my mother made me a dress for the temple from the same pattern as hers from her wedding day. I love it so much! (below)

My dad’s chops were AMAZING! And that tie and jacket? Heck yes!

Banana Cake

Posted on Jul 22, 2008

Last time I made this Banana cake a few weeks ago for a dinner party. Everyone liked it but it went down like a rock. Mostly because I didn’t do it right… I thought it was pretty sick.

I’m trying my hand at it again for a dinner party tomorrow night. I figure if it doesn’t work out I’ll just buy some cookies and milk.

2 1/4 cups cake flour
3/4 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon plus pinch of salt
1 cup mashed ripe bananas (about 2 large)
1/4 cup buttermilk
1 teaspoon plus 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
1 1/2 cups (3 sticks) unsalted butter, room temperature
1 1/3 cups sugar
2 large eggs

2 8-ounce packages cream cheese, room temperature
1 1/2 cups powdered sugar

2 large bananas, peeled, sliced

Portraits in Columbia

Posted on Jul 18, 2008

I found a couple winners in Columbia whilst Sir Luke and I were wondering around killing time while the ladies and family played dress up and got hopped up on Sarsaparilla.

The Pied Piper of Columbia is apparently not the town’s favorite. He plays the same song over and over. I gave him a dollar and took some pictures. He made sure to tell me I could only take his picture if I didn’t use it in an advertisement.

The corn guy was a welcome relief from our day out in the sun. Even if it was 95 degrees all day.

Baby Faces

One of the best parts of our trip was finally seeing my nieces Stella and Ava for the first time. I haven’t seen my brother and his family for ages. It was really wonderful to be an entire family again. Olivia, who I hadn’t seen since she was one, was a little doll at four and snuggled right up to me.

My nephew, Dave, is a fabulous big brother. He rescued “the ladies” on more than one occasion from little falls or fights amongst each other.

My favorite even from the trip, which was even before we got to Yosemite was our trip to Columbia, CA, an old gold mining town. We went on a stagecoach ride complete with stagecoach robber. Problem was, the ladies thought he was a real bad guy come to get them. In the end he let us go, “take your scared children and get out of here!”

Good times
