Display Thursday: Mix and Match

Feb 2, 2012  |  Posted by: Megan Stay

If you haven’t caught on by now I’m kind of a mix and matcher. I have an eclectic style that doesn’t really fit into most people’s idea or “normal.” But that’s just fine with me! I’ve always been the type to want to be different. I struck out of my own in high school and took my first photography class even thought none of my friends were. Which was kind of a big deal since I’m pretty wimpy at doing things without my comfort posse around me. But I do like to go against the grain. And today’s display thursday is no exception.

I LOVE to mix and match frames and this idea has me all hot and bothered. It makes me a little miffed at myself that I didn’t pick up a giant sweet-ace filigreed frame at the Rose Bowl Flea Market last month. I love love love the idea of putting more contemporary framed images inside a larger ornate one. Totally genius. Plus I’m pretty sure this frame is made of recycled cardboard, which means it’s that much cooler. Who comes up with this stuff?!

I don’t see any reason to follow any kind of “rules” that say you have to put an unframed canvas on the wall with other unframed canvas. You can totally mix them with framed pieces, mirrors or like this space, framed words. Would be great in a child’s room or use your last name or the first letter of your last name in the living room with your wedding photos. Gorgeous. My gears are turning my new red “S.”

You can keep a look consistent even with different frames by keeping the matting similar. Here they used different colors and shapes of thin profiled frames with very wide mats. It would be easy to do and allow you to collect frames over time from thrift stores or the sale aisle. Just keep in mind your style and look while hunting for the perfect fit.

Stand out from the crowd! Be different and bold! Break them rules!
