How Wii got Wii’d and other coniving stories:

Sir Luke wasn’t sure how he was ever going to get me on the video game band wagon. My mother never allowed video games in the house while I was growing up solo. My brother would always attempted to buy me a Nintendo 64 and was stopped by ye olde Madre. I was already completely addicted to television so there was no way she was allowing more face time with the set.

When Sir Luke and I got married I told him I didn’t want an Xbox in our house. I had seen a friend cry about her husband spending hours in front of the TV when they first got married and I wasn’t about to get on that boat. It was at this point that Sir Luke knew he would have to take some serious actions to make his wants my wants.

Cue Thanksgiving 2007. A loaded Lincoln Town Car full of passengers arrive at The Stays and immediately begin playing Wii Tennis. I sit on the couch like a bump on a log because I’m too nervous about my horrid hand eye coordination (I could never do well in Super Mario but did master the first level while my friend played to win and I supplied her extra lives). After a couple games and hearty laughter I joined the merriment. Whoa! Wii is fun!

That was that.

BUT THEN! Sir Luke pulled out the big guns this last trip over New Year 2008. I feel love from above when I see Mario as a bumble bee. Mario Galaxy is the CUTEST game I have ever beheld. It’s unreal. Bunny rabbits with star ears, giant baby flower dino, star bits, feeding stars ’til they explode into planets, the list is endless. And I only played two galaxies!

I know, I know, this story is longer than any human wants to read. But all this leads up to this week when I went in search of Wii online, since they are notoriously im-pose-ee-blay to find. We had no idea there was a Nintendo World store right here in Manhattan. AND they get shipments of Wii’s every single day. 100. So we got in line this morning at 7am after the other 68 people ahead of us (the first woman in line had been there since 4AM). I left for work before the store opened at 9AM and Sir Luke stood “on line” for another hour until HE GOT ONE! He was also gracious enough to purchase Mario Galaxy! I am completely elated!

If this game makes me this happy I can only imagine the kind of joy that Sir Luke gets out of Halo and that other game he is always championing for Xbox.

Touche, Sir Luke, you are the master debater.

Come play on the 360 at our house next time you visit – I’ll have you in love with that as well 🙂 I’ll also show you the entertainment (Tivo-like features, stream mp3s, video, etc) features you’ll get.

Oh, and if Luke ever spends all his time away from you on video games like your friend, come see his family and we’ll knock some sense into him!

hahaha! My mom would never allow us to have any kind of gaming system in our house either, so I understand a bit where you’re coming from. I must admit that we got an xbox 360 the week before Christmas. Brady has wanted one FOREVER but would always convince himself (for whatever reason) that he couldn’t get one. I literally had to tell him that we were getting in the car, driving to the nearest store that has one, and buying it. I really like playing games, but it’s hard to get the menfolk to understand the idea of “moderation”. I think Brady is learning.. slowly. He is also a Call of Duty 4 freak. I must admit, that it is the most amazing and visually stunning game I’ve ever seen. The graphics are crazy! Anyway, the xbox 360 can be a very fun thing – just make sure that for every first person shooter Luke gets, you get a game that you would want to play too! There are loads of cool games that I think you’d like. My favorite, and probably the most nerdy game in existence, is Oblivion. I’m a total closet geek.

Haha, please Caps, like it’s in the closet!

We’ll have to look into it when we’re not so broke. This was definitely a splurge out of the Christmas/Wedding monies

one time i saw video of this guy playing halo while his 1 year old son watched. don’t ever let luke do that.

this makes me think of my brother who plays video games for a living and how bad i feel for whomever he marries some day.

    Hey, Uncle Jesse,

You my man – keep the new Mr. and Mrs. on the right track. I’m not sure Wii is the right track, but I’m getting one when they become easier to get than a six hour line at the store!!

Keep on battin’ the air folks!!
