Make It Monday: Plush Strawberries DIY Place Cards

Jul 16, 2012  |  Posted by: Megan Stay

Let’s start off the week with something sweet. Strawberry season has begun! I love this time of year in the produce aisle. Watermelon and strawberries are my vice in the summer. There were fantastic trucks full of delectable fruit. All summer long, driving back from the beach my mom would stop and get boxes of fruit to nosh on way. Mmm, mmm tasty.

Strawberries and summer weddings are the perfect pair. Seasonal fruits make a great addition to red and white decor. I thought I’d make some adorable fabric strawberries that don’t go bad or get smooshed. These little guys could be used any number of ways, but I chose to embellish place cards today.

Let’s get down to business!

What you’ll need:

  • two kinds of red fabric
  • green felt
  • needle and thread
  • scissors
  • stuffing
  • pen
  • floral wire
  • place cards

1. Using your pen, trace a circle on your fabric, vary the sizes but don’t go too small or your strawberries will be non-existent.

2. Cut out the circle and cut into quarters.

3. Finger press one quarter in half, right sides together.
4. Take your needle and thread and make a running stitch up the open side of the forming berry. DO NOT TRIM THREAD. Turn right-side-out.
5. Stuff the berry, making sure to press stuffing in the tip with your pen. Make a small running stitch around the top edge of the cone.
6. Pull thread tight around tip and stitch to close and trim.
7. Cut out small leaf for top of berry from felt and stitch to the top of the strawberry.
8. Now wrap floral wire around the shaft of the pen to make a corkscrew spring. I twisted mine more after I removed it from the pen to give it a more organic look. Cut in half, or smaller, depending on the size of your strawberry. Now stitch it to the middle of the top of the strawberry.
9. Hot glue your strawberry to the place card or just pinch the curled floral wire around the card, like I did. And Poof! You’re done!
Cute, no?!
What do you think of this DIY project? Is it doable? Have an event, wedding, shower, birthday or otherwise? Stuck on something you need for the soiree, i.e. favors, place cards, decor, tablescapes, etc? Let me know your color scheme and theme and I’ll give it a whirl. Who knows your project could be featured next! Love the idea but don’t have time to make it? Email me and I’ll give you a quote (meg at megruth dot com).

We’ll do another project with these little beauties next week too!
