Jack Sparrow Can Only Dream

Posted on Jul 27, 2006

I never really believed that a person could honestly find treasures on the street. Who, first of all, would give away anything that was perfectly useful and awesome? And secondly, what on earth could be so appealing that it would posess someone to pick it up out of a pile of garbage and carry home?

On Wednesdays the trash is stuff and on Thursdays it’s real garbage. I don’t know why but there is a difference. It’s not recycling or anything but Wednesdays are the days when mattresses end up on the sidewalks and baby pens sit folded next to hundred of brown boxes within boxes. Tonight, for the first time in my life, I saw the metal innards of a sofa bed. The springs were folded on top of one another. It looked kind of naked without its couch casing and mattress inside.

The point of this is to tell you about the awesome chair I got last week whilst walking home and the stellar trunk I got tonight whilst walking home again. I always look out on Wednesdays to see if anything great will be ready for the taking. And until last week there hand’t been anything. I was strolling down Pinehurst and saw the chair, noticed it was amazing, but I kept going. Then I stopped. I couldn’ resist my temptation. 1) it’s free 2) it’s got the best fabric on it 3) I need stuff for when i get my apartment 4) freak! it’s free! So I went back and just picked it up and carried it home. As I got closer to my house a passed a mother wheeling her daughter in a stroller. “She’s carring a chair!” said the the little sprite as she pointed at me. I had to laugh, as did her moom. I got it home and cleaned it up and sat in it. I felt like a queen.

Tongiht. I just missed this amazing mirror because some guy ahead of me picked it ip first. I was kinda bummed as I heaed home. but just before I reached my building I crossed the street an low and behold…THE BEST FREE FIND! I have a small…sort of large obsession with old trunks. The kind of trunks that people took across the ocean. The kind of trunks that held memories. The kind of trunks that can hold mine. So I picked it up and carried it home.

My hope chest is an antique humpback trunk. When I was 16 my mom gave it to me. She found it in an antique store in North Dakota and had it sent to California…pretty pricey even if the trunk itself was super cheap. She took my sisters and I to New York that spring. We went to Ellis Island, although now I appreciate it far more than before (I have become addicted to family history, I wish I had more time to do it). As we walked into the huge entry room there was a stack of trunks piled up at least 20 ft high and probably 40 ft wide. I was entranced. I walked around the whole stack, looking at each trunk and wondering what story was trapped under its lid. As I came back to the spot I started I stopped suddenly. I stared at my own trunk. The one I had recieved two months earlier. It was sitting there propped among so many others. I felt like I was part of something. It was amazing. I miss my trunk.

I had to go assist produce on the marlboro shoot i organized with sarah, one of the producers at marge casey. it mainly consisted of me being a gopher..which is what i thought more of my internship would have been like…not my real person job. but peter bex (which is an awesome name) told me that i was paying my dues on the bottom rung, and you know what that means, i am going to move up! yesss.

well the point of this post is to tell you this story. after i came back from my first run to Davidoff’s snazzy cigar shop on 54th and madison (i was looked at down the noses of many 40 year-old-men in suits puffing away on cigars) i came back and went to use the restroom. i went through the coded doors and ran into…..

THIS

THEN Sarah was using the bathroom and she was burst in on whilst on the toilet by THIS!!!

THEN as i was going downstairs to flag a cab for Peter Bex i got to ride the elevator with a bicycle and THIS!!!!

So….good news to those of you who don’t know…but really anyone reading this would know already. I GOT A JOB! so as of Monday July 17, 2006 I am an ADULT!!! crazy…really really crazy. I will be an independent FINALLY! I can’t wait…or can I? So i will be working inr production at Marge Casey + Associates I asked about having an email address that isn’t inter@margecasey.com anymore. So hopefully that will happen soonish. So yeah, I guess my first paycheck comes in like two weeks or so, which will be weird to see something more than $200 in a paycheck.

So we went to the MOMA friday night and ate in Chinatown at some place called Manadrin. It was d-lish! and then afterward everyone went to the chinatwon ice cream factory and then i went and got BOBA!!! which is sooo good!

so here’s some stuff from out night out. DELISH on so many levels!

Hillary (the alpha female and my D-lish) roommate Sarah

pondering art

We honestly thought that jared was going to run and jump onto the train…freak it was so scary! And sarah reluctantly tried her first BOBA!!! i love it!

Well, we couldn’t start the weekend like that and not continue it with awesomeness. so…we went to coney island on saturday for the annual siren musica fesitval. it rained a little. we ate nathan hot dogs. we collected a vast array of free music. and we listened to a couple awesome bands with really bad sound. oh well it was still waaay good times.

we tried to win..

oh rainy times

We waited in line for like 30 minutes at Nathan’s and then it started to rain so we had to eat under my unbrella on a barricade in the street. then my camera went all craziness on me so we took a video instead of pictures…

Well i guess that’s about it for now. My airmattress is busted and i forgot to get the pathcy stuff tonight so it’s the couch for me again. oh well. Next on the to do list…find a new place to live, you know, for life!

so…it seems to me and some of my cohorts that our clan has turned into some sort of drama reminiscent of the 90s hit series 90210. Thanks to Aaron Spelling(may he rest in peace) we have something to compare our gorgeous soap opera to.

keep in mind, when gazing upon this picture, that there is absolutely no telling who is into who. that is the sheer madness of it all..that no one knows! the saga will continue. so STAY TUNED!

So i Just got my lunch from Chop’t and I’m sitting here enjoying it like nobody’s business when I taste the tofu I had them add and frankly it was pretty bleh. But right now I am looking at this website that this guy at my work (Nate, athough he likes to spell it N8…) showed to me and I’m thinking, wow, lot’s of free time on his hands. But seriosuly, it is pretty amusing. We could all use a few more subliminal messages

Anyway…this is N8. This is his website and his picture. Disreguard the fact that it says Doktor(his spelling as well) M Turner. the funny thing is that he says he is “seriously joking,” which is confusing in it of itself. he makes electronic music with subliminal messages. so enjoy
