Vegas Fun

Posted on Feb 3, 2012

I don’t often get down to the strip. But when a wonderful friend comes to town and says she’ll carve out a wedge of time for me to share a meal with her, I am there like white of rice. Capree is a one of my dearest friends from college. We’ve known each other a long time (if I try and crunch the numbers it makes me feel old, so don’t push it). She has an amazing blog about all things modern in design land. It’s awesome, My Adventure is Your Advantage (MAIYA, for short). She’s like a little sprite of joy and laughter.

I took her to the Wicked Spoon at the Cosmopolitan. She’d never been inside and I knew it was totally up her alley. As soon as she saw The Chandelier she was sold. Four stories of sparkling crystals? Um, yes please.

We had a great time. I was sad when I had to take her to the airport. But she’s coming back, she promised.

When I heard about the Gourmet Food Truck Festival at South Pointe I wasn’t too sure about how good the food would be. But upon arriving and seeing the endless lines of people at each of the twenty some trucks I decided I had made the right decision in dragging my friends out there. After making a lap around the trucks and waiting in two lines and deciding against the food we settled on Devilicious and got some seriously gourmet grilled cheese sandwiches. Take a look at the menu! I’m salivating again. I really should not be posting this on an empty stomach.

And what’s a week without a walk with Ripley-dog? Because my community is still building (it was a ten year plan before the housing crash and I’m pretty sure at this point it’s about 30 years). The farthest edge of our walk is an area that will one day be a giant park. Right now it’s just rocks and and dirt. But someone in my neighborhood has taken to stacking rocks out in the wasteland. There’s several sculptures. I love seeing them sprout up.

Have a wunderbar weekend!!

Display Thursday: Mix and Match

Posted on Feb 2, 2012

If you haven’t caught on by now I’m kind of a mix and matcher. I have an eclectic style that doesn’t really fit into most people’s idea or “normal.” But that’s just fine with me! I’ve always been the type to want to be different. I struck out of my own in high school and took my first photography class even thought none of my friends were. Which was kind of a big deal since I’m pretty wimpy at doing things without my comfort posse around me. But I do like to go against the grain. And today’s display thursday is no exception.

I LOVE to mix and match frames and this idea has me all hot and bothered. It makes me a little miffed at myself that I didn’t pick up a giant sweet-ace filigreed frame at the Rose Bowl Flea Market last month. I love love love the idea of putting more contemporary framed images inside a larger ornate one. Totally genius. Plus I’m pretty sure this frame is made of recycled cardboard, which means it’s that much cooler. Who comes up with this stuff?!

I don’t see any reason to follow any kind of “rules” that say you have to put an unframed canvas on the wall with other unframed canvas. You can totally mix them with framed pieces, mirrors or like this space, framed words. Would be great in a child’s room or use your last name or the first letter of your last name in the living room with your wedding photos. Gorgeous. My gears are turning my new red “S.”

You can keep a look consistent even with different frames by keeping the matting similar. Here they used different colors and shapes of thin profiled frames with very wide mats. It would be easy to do and allow you to collect frames over time from thrift stores or the sale aisle. Just keep in mind your style and look while hunting for the perfect fit.

Stand out from the crowd! Be different and bold! Break them rules!

Seeing Love: Stephanie and Dan Las Vegas Wedding Photographer

Posted on Feb 1, 2012

It’s two weeks til Valentine’s day and only 4 weeks til my golden birthday! It’s a going to be a good month. So I’m starting it off right with Stephanie and Dan’s fabulous and vintage Vegas wedding!

I really feel privileged to have been able to be a part of this wedding day. Steph found me online and was a total gem through the whole process. Being in New York and planning a wedding in Las Vegas can be a challenge, especially when your fiance is living in Bermuda (uh, people live there? I thought it was a secret island paradise). She found her amazing dress just before Priscilla of Boston went away for good, which is completely sad for the wedding industry. They have gorgeous dresses, obviously. Stephanie wanted a vintage vibe that was low-key and gorgeous. She worked it from head to toe. Quite literally.

Aside from going to a total hidden gem in Las Vegas (more on that later) my favorite part of the day was getting on a double decker bus and coasting down the strip. My first time! It took all my energy to not stand and take photos while the bus was moving. It was forbidden because even a shorty like be could lose her head, in a very real sense.

Thanks for being the bees knees, Steph and Dan!

Love the first look!! So so sweet. I love how excited Stephanie is to see the look on Dan’s face.

And it was priceless. But look at her, who wouldn’t have this expression upon first seeing her.

Take note that everyone has a hand in their pocket because all the dresses have pockets! LOVE! Perfect for wedding day lipgloss.

I love these faces. Love.

You might not believe this, but this newly remodeled chapel is in the Imperial Palace. I was kinda skeptical when walking through the casino and my jaw fell to the floor when I saw the ceremony space. GORGEOUS! Who knew, right?

During the shot above everyone on the top deck of the bus started pointing up. And to all our surprise and lovely find appeared up in a hotel balcony.

We were all cracking up, only in Vegas!

Thank you so much for including me in your amazing wedding day, Steph and Dan! I loved spending time with you and hope to again soon!

From Dogs to Donuts

Posted on Jan 27, 2012

This week I’ve spent a lot of time working on boring business stuff. But I’ve also been working a ton of a styled wedding shoot with some fantastic vendors here in Vegas. I’ve still got a lot of work to do and there are lots of things to put together so it will be a while before you see if but it’s going to be amazing. I can’t wait to share with you!!

We bought this huge donut pillow from Kidrobot last year from their Yummy line. If you don’t know by now, I love Kidrobot. And anything that adds a face to inanimate objects is sold in my book. Luke convinced me I should get a Wii (I was very against gaming systems) by showing me how cute Super Mario Galaxy was. It was all over when I saw the bunnies with stars on their ears. Are you kidding?! There were stars on their long bunny ears!

I like cute things, so sue me.

Working from home means I hang out a whole lot with my dog. My smelly, smelly, dog. She was in serious need of a bath this week. Poor little Ripley Dog hates baths. Hate them with a passion. I sing a song every time she gets a bath….yes, a song for my dog. “It’s bath time, it’s bath time, do-do-do-do, it’s bath time.” The fear of God is in her face when I start singing that song pre-bath. And Sir Luke will sometimes do it when we’re all laying on the couch just to freak her out. He’s so cruel! But it is pretty funny…

Rip and I got off to a late start on our walk this week. But it turns out it wasn’t so bad because the sunset was gorgeous and the Cheshire Cat moon was amazing. I love the jet streams during sunset. They’re so pretty lit in the light of evening.

I hope you have a fantastic weekend!! I’ll be working on some DIY projects.

Display Thursday: Across the Board

Posted on Jan 26, 2012

I’ve talked lots about movement form floor to ceiling through photographs. Lengthening the height of a room. Well this time we’re talking about making a room look bigger around by leading your eye across the walls.

When I saw this photo it totally changed my mind for how I want to display photos in my loft. We’ve got loads of art and posters from our various travels. We’ve got great plans to put them all up in the loft. I was going to do a collected look on the walls around the room in the same way I’ve done down stairs and in my bedroom. But I love how these move around the room on the same plane of view. The similar frames make the photographs the focal point and continue to move the eye across the room.

This beachy vibe is perfect for a seaside home or for anyone wanting to bring a little breezy air into a space. I love these fences that I’ve only ever seen on the east coast. I think they’re super romantic. Keep in mind this is definitely a more casual feel (as you can tell from the half naked man on the couch, la-la!) and would not work for a formal room. You could even do something like this for a background of a treat table or photo booth at a wedding. Use clothespins to attach the photos to the fence for easy changes all year long! And because it’s a fence there is no limit to how long your fence can be.

Using images to wrap a room can seem busy and overwhelming but building slowly and maybe doing a more narrow strip of photographs. I think this would be amazing to blend in photos of ancestors and current ones. Also, how much are you loving that light fixture peering into the photo?! I have a serious problem with loving light fixtures that I have no place for in my house…  Follow the link and look at the rest of the house, it’s amazing.

Do you have a space to make movement around the room with photographs?

Arise and Shine Forth

Posted on Jan 26, 2012

As many of you know I’m very involved with my church, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. My main role is helping mentor and support a group of young women ages 12-18 develop into the wonderful women I know they are and can become. Every January we have a night dedicated to motivating them to make goals and achieve them for the year. “New Beginnings” is also about getting the girls turning twelve and joining our group excited about the program.

I help in the excitement by giving a photograph to each of the girls that reflects the theme of the year. This year it’s “Arise and Shine Forth.” I shaded all the photos in a warm color to reflect the color scheme the girls chose (sunrise). I love these girls so much! It really is such a privilege to work with them each week. There is a great purpose in helping others. All the clergy and things that happen in my church are unpaid and on a voluntary basis. We have a dedicated group of people in my ward and I’m really glad to be a part of it.

Can you spot the new girls? They turn twelve throughout the year so we don’t get to welcome them just yet but hopefully these photographs will help get them stoked on leaving the little kids and joining our crew of young women. Here’s to a great 2012!
