Skylar: Las Vegas Desert Senior Portraits

Posted on Mar 15, 2013

When Skylar and I started off on our adventure to the desert, the first time, Alicia Keys song, “This Girl Is On Fire” started blasting from my speakers. “This is my jam this year. 2013 is my year,” I told her.

And it so is! I am so happy Skylar chose me to photograph her senior portraits! I love this girl. Like a lot. She actually assisted me on a wedding a couple years ago to see if it was something she would be interested in. It wasn’t, but it definitely helped me get to know this go-getter a lot more. She is incredibly loyal, gifted, and family oriented. I’m so proud of her for all of her accomplishments and cannot wait to see what she has in store for the world. She’s on fire too, my friends. We both are.

It’s apparent this shoot was on two different days, one completely cold and overcast, and the other, warm and sunny, not a cloud in the sky. Being that this beauty’s name is Skylar, blue skies were kinda….critical. So we did a second little shoot just for that. And it was totally worth it.

Congrats on graduating this year, Sky! You’re a babe!

Styled Shoot: French Vintage Glam Wedding at Legends Ranch

Posted on Feb 27, 2013

During the “off season” in the wedding industry, vendors get together and collaborate. It’s great for filling the creative cup and, hopefully, it helps brides get ideas for their own big day. Soon you will see the shoot I put together. But for now, this gorgeous vintage glam shoot, coordinated and designed by Kristen Joy & Liz Le, will have to suffice. I don’t think you’ll be disappointed.

I’ve never been to Legends Ranch before but it is a great venue for your wedding day in Las Vegas. For those local to Las Vegas it is the anti-Vegas venue. If you want something more rustic, country or simple a beautiful outdoor location, this is it! A wedding at Legends Ranch is sure to be breathtaking. If you need proof, keep looking!

Vendor List:
Hair and Makeup: Amelia C. & Co.
Vintage Decor: Wooden Trunk

I love participating in Styled Shoots! A BIG thank you to everyone involved!

Make it Monday: Mod Frame Embellishment

Posted on Feb 11, 2013

Friends and lovers, well my only lover is Sir Luke, so I suppose that should be singular!  Make it Monday is BACK! It may be for a limited time but it’s here today. So you better enjoy!

I buy an insane amount of frames. Usually this happens when I am pushing through crowds of people on Black Friday at Target. I tend to buy cheap generic frames in droves. And they’re boring. Like Milo being pulled to the Doldrums, type boring (if you catch this reference you are my new best friend).

Adding leather and card stock triangles to said blase frames is easy and quick. The toughest part is coming up with your own fancy-pants design. I found my pattern for my equilateral triangles here. I had to look up what type of triangles these were due to the fact that my “A” in Geometry in tenth grade did not carry through to my 20s.

What you’ll need:
  • Card stock, two or more colors
  • Leather, two or more colors
  • Scissors
  • Triangle pattern
  • Glue, my favorite is E-600
  • Pen (not pictured)
  • Art to frame

Step 1: Print template on card stock and cut out shapes. Trace some triangles on leather and cut those out too.
Step 2: Once you’ve got a plethora of triangles to play with, arrange them on the frame in a design most pleasing to you. I layered some of the triangles to add more depth.
Step 3: Use the awesome glue I recommended and secure triangles to the frame. It’s easier to layer triangles prior to affixing them to the frame.

Place your artwork in your frame and enjoy!

Not too shabby, right? Don’t ever feel fenced in by your mundane frame. There are countless things you can do to add a little pizazz. Think of adding in triangles to the image under the glass. It adds more continuity and depth.

If you do this project I’d love to see the outcome. Send your images to meg (at) megruth (dot) com

P.S. You’re great.

Too cute!

Downtown Las Vegas Engagement Photos: Chelsey & Wes

Posted on Feb 7, 2013

I am so glad that Angelica from Green Orchid Events connected me with Chelsey and Wes. There is a a such a lovely bond between these two. It’s a genuine, calm, and very strong love. There is no doubt that they will have a wonderful wedding day and absolutely fantastic marriage.

Vegas isn’t known for chilly weather, but in the week leading up to their engagement session we had snow and temperatures in the 20s! Thankfully the sun made an appearance and we had perfect 60 degree weather! We started the afternoon out at the Arts District in downtown Las Vegas. This area is full of murals, graffiti, and amazing architecture. And although I make every image about my couples, it’s always fun to use beautiful surroundings to enhance each moment.

After a quick wardrobe change, we headed off to the Smith Center for the Performing Arts. This building melts my heart. Art deco is so romantic. And I found out that Wes sucked up his Air force manhood and took Chelsey to see The Nutcracker there the month before. I’m always so impressed when men who aren’t into something their loved one is, takes the time and effort to make them happy. Even if they’re kind of miserable. So telling of the kind of person they are!

We finished the engagement session at Fremont Street under the vintage neon lights that grace every structure in this old school Vegas gem. We finished just before the cold came back out!

Tip: Your engagement session is a perfect opportunity to test run hair and makeup ideas for your wedding day. Chelsey chose the fabulous hair and makeup team, Your Beauty Call. When you have a team that knows how to complete a look for photos to last the length of the day and tears, you will be so pleased you made the decision to hire professionals. I completely recommend it!

So looking forward to their wedding at the Westin at Lake Las Vegas in April. It’s going to be beautiful and full of love!

Woodsy Massachusetts Lifestyle Family Portraits: Stay Family

Posted on Jan 23, 2013

Don’t get confused. This is not Sir Luke with a secret second family. It’s his younger, fro-ier brother, Ben, and his beautiful wife, Rebekah and kidds! I just love this family. And even though I’m totally afraid of babies (as in they seem so breakable!) I held, Johnny every chance I got.

One of my favorite moments at Christmas was our dinner out. My nephew, James looks across the table at Luke and says, “you look like my dad.” It was hilarious. And completely true.

Luckily my in-laws have a house that is pretty much in a forest. So we just made our way to a very old stone fence from the days of yore and the pond in the “backyard.” I think it’s so important to make sure when you’re doing photos with little kids to make sure there is something for them to do. That way when they’re sick of sitting still they can play and have fun. Works like a charm!

I’m so glad I got to spend so much time with this clan this year!
