Friday the 13th!

Posted on Jun 13, 2008

Today is Friday the 13th. I like the number 13, and most odd numbers like it.

I think New York is silly for rarely including the 13th floor in buildings. How do they do this? you may ask. You put a less vexing 4 where the 3 goes.

If I had my way I’d be watching a late showing of The Happening from M. Knight Shama-llama-ding-dong. Sure, his last movie was pretty much insane and a total bust. I’m actually surprised he didn’t star in this new one. His cameo’s got larger and larger with each film.

This Friday the 13th, I’ll probably end up at home snuggling on the couch with Sir Luke, watching Night of the Living Dead, instead. There is nothing like a scary movie to get the blood boiling on a Freaky Friday.

Pancakes

Posted on Jun 12, 2008

I found this new food blog called Joy the Baker . It’s all baking and let me tell you, I’m in love. I can’t wait to try these gingerbread pancakes.

Gingerbread Pancakes

From Joy the Baker From the Gourmet Cookbook

1 cup all-purpose flour

1 teaspoon baking powder

1/2 teaspoon baking soda

1/2 teaspoon salt

1 teaspoon ground ginger

1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1/8 teaspoon ground cloves

3 Tablespoons molasses (not robust or black strap) I also added 1/4 cup brown sugar to the dry ingredients, because the molasses didn’t taste like enough of a sweetener to me

1 large egg

1 cup sour cream

3 Tablespoons whole milk

2 Tablespoons melted butter, plus additional for brushing the griddle

Preheat oven to 200 degrees F

Whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, spices and brown sugar (if you’re using it) in a medium bowl. Whisk together molasses, egg, sour cream, milk and butter in a small bowl, then add the flour mixture and stir just until combined.

Heat griddle or 12-inch heavy skillet over moderate heat until hot enough to make drops of water scatter over the surface. Brush with butter. Working in batches of 4 to 6 (depending on the size of the griddle), drop 1/4 cup batter per pancake onto griddle and cook until bubbles appear on surface and undersides are golden, 1 to 2 minutes. Flip pancakes with a spatula and cook until golden brown and cooked through, 1 to 2 minutes more. Transfer pancakes to a heatproof plate and keep warm in oven while you cook remaining batches.

Desk

Posted on Jun 11, 2008

We’ve moved into a new building at work. Last week I spent almost an entire day trying to find the perfect desk that would please both my boss in my office and the name on all my checks as well as me. It was nigh to impossible and I didn’t find anything that anyone could agree on. So the task was passed on to another employee and we found something that will work, even if it makes my windowless room look even more sterile. But what do I know? I just work there.

I did find a sweet desk that I’d love to have in the future sometime. It’s rad!

Wall of Love

1. The Faceted Couroucou by Carrie Marill. A gift from GayLynn and Kelly Johnson, my favorite wedding gift. It has been called beautifully morbid. I guess that’s what I like in my life, beautiful morbidity.

2. George Troutman by Quinn/Gorbott. I don’t know Quinn, but I read his blog. We know some of the same people, but it was still a little weird requesting one of his limited edition prints.

3. Panda by Charlie Crane. One of my first toys was a giant stuffed panda. It was giant to me then, but now it’s an average sized stuffed bear. It’s interesting what our memory tells us to remember and what is real.

4. Pillow by Anthropologie. I couldn’t find the exact pillow. Sir Luke picked it out when we went in for a peek before we headed to dinner a few weeks ago. It was on sale and too glorious to pass up. My husband has good taste.

5. 8mm Projector by Ampro. Sir Luke and I made a trip to DI and found this amazing piece of machinery for $15, which I talked down to $10 for faulty wiring on the plug, which Sir Luke promptly fixed when we got home. We took it to Los Angeles over Memorial Day to watch my Dad’s 8mm reels from the army as well as his family 8mm reels. It’s incredible to see my grandparents moving and living and being people.

6. Lack shelf by IKEA. We got our Lack shelf on our latest visit to Utah. I wandered around the entire store with my tights nearly halfway down my tush. I made it out to the parking lot and into the car but didn’t think to try and cover my unmentionables as I stripped off my tights. Woops.

Sir Luke’s Natal Anniversary

Posted on Jun 9, 2008

This time last year Christina and I were heart attacking Sir Luke‘s room in New York before he came back from Boston. At that point we hadn’t had our first kiss or our first date. I am so grateful to have him in my life. I cannot imagine myself with anyone else. He is kind and thoughtful and makes me laugh. And daaaang, he is handsome!

Favorite Sir Luke quote of the moment. “What’s the point of a two door? We might as well buy a scooter?”

I love you my love! Happy birthday! You mean so much to me and I am so happy you’re my husband! MUAH!

Food Star

My second to last semester at BYU I took an entrepreneur class. I liked the class, not so much the whole start your own business for class thing. My taxes did not like that. Kelsey Nixon was in my class. She had her own cooking show in Provo. Her group sold DVD’s of her cooking show and did pretty well. Kelsey also interned in New York at the same time as I did.

Currently she is on the show The Next Food Network Star. You can watch videos about the show online and vote for her. I think she’d make a great host. She’s just fantastic!
